Discover Dothan and The Wiregrass

Dothan is known as “The Peanut Capital of The World”. Dothan celebrates this heritage of peanuts and peanut farmers by hosting The National Peanut Festival every year in the fall. This area is also known as part of “The Wiregrass”, named for the native Aristida stricta, which looks like wire.

While Dothan may be known for its peanut production, there’s far more growing here than crops. Our thriving medical community plays a vital role in the local workforce, with top-tier facilities serving towns across the tri-state area. These institutions are equipped with cutting-edge technology and staffed by dedicated professionals who make Dothan a regional healthcare hub.

We’re also proud to be neighbors with Fort Rucker, a cornerstone of our economy and culture. The base employs a significant number of civilians and contributes to the strength and diversity of our community.

Adding to the excitement is the arrival of HudsonAlpha in downtown Dothan — a biotech powerhouse conducting groundbreaking agricultural research. Their presence is sparking innovation and attracting a wave of technology-focused enterprises, positioning Dothan as a rising center for scientific advancement.

One of the fun things about Dothan is “Peanuts Around Town”. The Downtown Group, a non-profit coalition, started the “Peanuts Around Town” project designed to reinvigorate the downtown Dothan area and increase tourism. Now custom decorated peanuts made of fiberglass can be found all over town; in front of businesses, shops, playgrounds and even street corners.

Dothan is also known for the murals painted on downtown buildings. Historic murals painted by nationally and internationally acclaimed muralists adorn the walls of buildings in the downtown historic district.
